Masseter treatment: for jaw clenching first, jawline second
Two very different people book this treatment: one wakes up with headaches, the other wants a softer jawline. It serves both — but the conversation is different.
The masseter is the thick muscle at the angle of your jaw — the one that bulges when you clench. It is proportionally one of the strongest muscles in the human body, and when it is overworked it causes problems that people rarely connect to it: morning headaches, aching at the temples, worn teeth, and a face that has gradually squared off.
Treating it with botulinum toxin reduces the force it can generate. Both the medical benefit and the cosmetic one follow from that single mechanism.
The medical case
Bruxism — clenching and grinding, usually at night and usually unconsciously — is common and destructive. It wears enamel, fractures teeth, loads the jaw joint and produces a specific pattern of headache that starts at the temples and is worst on waking.
A mouthguard from your dentist protects the teeth, which is important, but it does not reduce the clenching force. Weakening the muscle does. For many people this is the treatment that stops the morning headaches, and the narrower jawline is a side effect they had not asked for.
The aesthetic case
A chronically overworked masseter hypertrophies — it grows, the way any exercised muscle does. Over years that widens the lower face and squares the jawline. Reducing the muscle's activity allows it to gradually reduce in bulk, softening the angle of the jaw and giving a slightly more tapered lower face.
This is a slow change and worth being clear about: it is not a jawline sculpting treatment in the immediate sense. Nothing is added, nothing is lifted. A muscle gradually gets smaller over the course of months.
The timeline — slower than most treatments
- Week 1–2: clenching force starts to reduce. People who came for headaches often notice improvement here.
- Week 4–6: the first visible narrowing, usually noticed by you before anyone else.
- Month 3: the clearest change. Photographs from before the first session are genuinely useful.
- Month 4–6: function returns gradually; a repeat session maintains the result.
The cosmetic effect compounds across sessions. A single treatment reduces clenching well; the visible slimming usually needs two or three sessions across a year, which is why the course is priced as it is.
What it costs
| Treatment | Single session | Course of 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Masseter treatment | £250 | £640 |
We allow 60 minutes, which includes the consultation. As with all botulinum toxin treatment in the UK, this is a prescription-only medicine and a consultation with a prescriber is required before any treatment — see our walkthrough of a first anti-wrinkle appointment.
What can go wrong, honestly
The masseter is a functional muscle and placement matters more here than in most areas. Poorly placed treatment can affect the risorius or the smile, producing an asymmetric or unnatural expression. This resolves as the product wears off, but "it will be fine in three months" is not a reassuring thing to be told.
Other realistic effects:
- Chewing fatigue for the first two or three weeks, particularly with tough food. Normal and temporary.
- A brief hollowing at the treated area in some people, which settles.
- Asymmetry if the two sides were unequal to begin with — often correctable at a review.
- Underwhelming results if the dose was too conservative for a genuinely strong muscle. This is the more common problem, and easily addressed at review.
This is a treatment where practitioner experience is worth more than a discount. Ask how often they treat this area specifically.
Who it suits
- Anyone waking with jaw ache, temple headaches, or a jaw that feels tight.
- Anyone whose dentist has mentioned wear on their teeth.
- Anyone who has noticed their lower face widening over several years, particularly through a stressful period.
- Anyone who catches themselves clenching during the day.
It is less suitable for anyone whose lower face is wide because of bone structure rather than muscle — that is a skeletal shape and weakening a muscle will not change it. A consultation can tell the difference by palpating the muscle while you clench.
Common questions
How long does masseter treatment take to slim the jawline?
Clenching force reduces within one to two weeks, but visible narrowing takes four to six weeks to begin and is clearest at around three months. The cosmetic effect builds across repeated sessions.
Does masseter treatment help teeth grinding?
Yes — it reduces the force the muscle can generate, which for many people resolves morning headaches and jaw ache. It is best combined with a dental guard, which protects the enamel while treatment reduces the clenching force.
Will masseter treatment affect my chewing?
Some chewing fatigue with tough food is common for the first two to three weeks and then settles. Normal eating is unaffected.
How much is masseter treatment in London?
At Polished Beauty London it is £250 for a single session or £640 for a course of three. A prescribing consultation is required first.
How long does masseter treatment last?
Function returns gradually over four to six months. Repeat sessions maintain the effect, and the cosmetic slimming tends to become more pronounced with each course.
