Fat-dissolving injections: what they can and cannot do
They work — on the right person, in the right area, with realistic expectations about the swelling. This covers all three conditions.
Fat-dissolving injections have a reputation problem in both directions. Some people expect surgical results without surgery; others have heard alarming stories and rule them out entirely. The reality sits in between and depends almost entirely on choosing the right candidate.
How they work
The injected solution disrupts the membrane of fat cells in a small, defined area. Those cells release their contents and are cleared by the body's lymphatic system over the following weeks. Cells destroyed this way do not come back — but the fat cells around them can still enlarge, so this is not immunity from future weight gain.
We offer two products, Lemon Bottle and Lip Lab, at the same price points. Which is used depends on the area and your practitioner's assessment on the day.
Who this genuinely suits
The ideal candidate is someone who is close to their stable weight, with a small, discrete, pinchable pocket of fat that has not responded to anything else. The classic example is a submental pocket — a "double chin" — on someone who is otherwise slim.
It does not work for:
- Loose skin. Removing fat from under lax skin can make the laxity more obvious, not less.
- Larger areas. This is a small-pocket treatment; it is not a weight-loss method and should never be sold as one.
- Visceral fat, or anything not sitting immediately beneath the skin.
- A jawline that is soft because of bone structure or muscle rather than fat.
The swelling nobody warns you about
This is the part that surprises people, so we say it plainly at consultation and we will say it here.
The area will swell significantly, and for the chin that swelling is visible. Expect:
- Days 1–3: the peak. Marked swelling, tenderness, sometimes a firm or lumpy feel. For the chin this genuinely looks worse than before treatment.
- Days 4–7: steady reduction. Most people are presentable by day five.
- Weeks 2–4: residual firmness resolves. Bruising, if any, fades.
- Weeks 4–8: the actual result becomes visible as the cleared fat is removed.
Do not book this within two weeks of anything you care about. A wedding, a holiday, a job interview, a photograph — allow a month.
Sessions and cost
| Area | Single session | Course of 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Chin & Jawline | £90 | £240 |
| Upper Back & Small Fat Pockets | £100 | £270 |
Most areas need two to four sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. A single session rarely completes the job, and the course price reflects the realistic protocol. Sessions are spaced deliberately: the swelling needs to resolve fully before the area can be honestly reassessed.
Aftercare
- Expect and plan for the swelling. Do not panic on day two.
- No massage of the area unless specifically instructed.
- Stay well hydrated — the clearance is lymphatic and hydration helps.
- Avoid alcohol for 48 hours.
- No sauna, steam or hot yoga for a week.
- Sleep slightly elevated for the first few nights if the chin was treated.
Risks worth knowing
Beyond swelling and bruising, the realistic risks are irregularity if the product is unevenly distributed, prolonged firmness, and — rarely — injury to nearby structures if injected incorrectly. The submental area sits close to the marginal mandibular nerve, which is why anatomy knowledge matters here more than price.
Ask who is injecting, what their training is, and how often they treat this area. This is not the treatment to book on a discount.
The honest summary
For a small, pinchable, stubborn pocket on someone near their stable weight, fat-dissolving injections are an effective, non-surgical option at a reasonable price. For anything else, they are a disappointing purchase, and a good consultation should say so before you spend anything.
Common questions
How many fat-dissolving sessions do I need?
Most areas need two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. A single session rarely completes the result, which is why courses are priced for three.
How long does swelling last after fat-dissolving injections?
Swelling peaks in the first three days and is significant, particularly under the chin. Most people are presentable by day five, with residual firmness resolving over two to four weeks. Allow a month before any important event.
Do fat-dissolving injections work on loose skin?
No — and they can make laxity more noticeable by removing the fat beneath it. Loose skin needs a firming approach rather than fat reduction. A consultation will identify which you have.
How much are fat-dissolving injections in London?
At Polished Beauty London, chin and jawline is £90 per session or £240 for a course of three. Upper back and small pockets is £100 per session or £270 for three.
Is the fat gone permanently?
The fat cells destroyed do not return, but remaining fat cells in the area can still enlarge with weight gain. The result is best maintained at a stable weight.
